A covid reflection on the before times, when gatherings were safe:
Bryce Dessner is playing his amplified electric guitar with 120 self-playing chimes.
We’re in the woods of Eau Claires, Wisconsin, for the Eaux Claires Music and Arts Festival, July 2018.
The audience walks around the chimes. Around one another. Around Bryce. They sit amongst one another. They close their eyes. Lie down. Stand up.
Sharing space is sharing air. Breath is air. Sound is air, air in motion. Watching this video of Bryce’s magical performance reminds me of what it means to share air+space with humans, with sounds, and with the objects producing those sounds.
I look forward to the time when we can safely share air, and sound, once again.
